Noel Villamán

I am a culturally diverse, committed, resilient hard working, community minded software developer who is seeking a position with a collaborative, task oriented team with whom I can thrive and be challenged in solving complex problems. I believe my capabilities and skills will make me an indispensable asset to your company. These skills and capabilities are demonstrated in my personal passion for programing, my education in computer science and my recent work experience and projects.

As a young man from the Dominican Republic, I had to overcome many obstacles to be where I am today. Even though I grew up in the poverty stricken inner-city of Santo Domingo where gang violence was the norm, I was determined to pursue my dream of becoming a software developer. It was there, despite sleepless nights and, little to eat and working part time as an English teacher, I earned my first Computer Science degree.

Unfortunately, when I moved to the United States my bachelor’s degree from Santo Domingo was not recognized by the educational institutions here. However, I was not deterred, I began studying Computer Science once again at Linn Benton community college in Corvallis, Oregon. After a few years I transferred to Oregon State University where, despite studying in my second language, I was able to secure a GPA above 3.0.

Through my undergraduate studies at Oregon State University I have become fluent in many programming languages. These include, but are not limited to: Java, C, C++, Python, SQL, C#, PHP, AJAX, HTML, JavaScript and CSS. I worked on projects that required expertise in using PHP and MySQL. For example, I used my expertise to connect a database to a choice of browsers for user accessibility. From the time it came out, I became comfortable using CSS3 to complete projects especially related to usability. I am excited to use my knowledge to benefit your company while at the same time gaining more programing skills to grow professionally.

During my time of studying at OSU, I continued working with my surrounding community by lending my expertise in Spanish while exercising my gift of teaching. I taught a community Spanish class through Linn Benton community college. I also worked as an educational assistant in a dual immersion program where I worked with disadvantaged youth. These work environments gave me invaluable experiences where I was able to hone in on my skills as a teacher and continue to be a supportive community leader.

I have a wealth of work experience to contribute to your team. Most recently I worked as a software engineer at Syntel in Boston, Massachusetts. During this time, I participated in an intense three-week training in enterprise Java. Afterwards, I collaborated with others creating applications using Java. One particular project was using Java to create and develop a car dealership application designed to assist car buyers in retrieving information on vehicles in a large database using Hibernate, SQL and the Spring Framework.

Because of my love of programing, I have been driven to work on projects during my own time. Some of these projects include making and maintaining websites for 2 churches, one national and the other international. I also collaborate with 2 other software engineers based in Boston to create data visualization and reports using and open source software called Birt.
